OUR HISTORY

Zion Church of God was organized around 1953 by Elder Thomas Johnson who also served as pastor. Bro. Johnson's sister, Ruth Johnson Tatum introduced him to the doctrine of the Church of God.

The first meeting place was in the home of Bro. Albert Johnson. The church met each Sunday for Sunday School, worship service, and children's hour. The membership began to grow and needed a larger building to accommodate it. Bro. Albert Bourne and Sis. Florence Nicholson each donated an acre of land on which the church building would be constructed.

In 1960, Elder Bruce Johnson (father of Eld. Thomas Johnson), became pastor and built the first structure. Eld. Johnson married Eliza Griggs who was a minister and she and her family added to the church. Others who served as pastor were Bro. S.T. Sowels and Sis. Ellis Tyson. In 1970, Bro. Henry C. Cotton was chosen by God to pastor Zion Church of God. He fed the church with the word and invested greatly in the young people. Bro. Cotton's priority was to build a new church with modern conveniences. This was accomplished by the help of God and a few people who were willing to give their time and money to this effort.

In 1986, Bro Isaac Carter assumed the full time pastorate of Zion Church of God and has served humbly and faithfully to advance the kingdom of God. The church was renovated thanks to the effort of members such as Rev. James Abrams, Rev. Nathan Johnson, Bro. Roy Drummond, the late Bro. Vito Formisano and many others who donated time and money to the completion of the edifice. The present sanctuary was designed and initially constructed by Bro. Al Gamble and dedicated in June 2008. Following the Easter Sunday storm of 2020, the sanctuary was rebuilt in 2021 and renovations continue.

Pastor Carter and the members of Zion realize that the work of the church is outside the walls and wanted the name to reflect the community outreach focus. So in 2012, the name was changed to Zion Community Church of God. It is our goal to be salt and light as we obey Jesus' Great Commission to Go and make disciples.
